Hello.
In my previous post, I introduced carbon black. This time, I would like to explain about recycled carbon black, which is a different form of carbon black.

What is Carbon Black

Recycle Carbon Black, unlike conventional petroleum-based production methods, refers to carbon black manufactured through renewable or environmentally friendly raw materials and production processes. This approach was developed with the aim of reducing carbon emissions and minimizing environmental impact, and it is gaining attention in various industries.
Characteristics of Recycled Carbon Black
1. Cost
-Conventional carbon black inevitably has higher production costs than recycled carbon black due to its relatively high raw material and refining costs. However, recycled carbon black generally has lower raw material costs because it uses waste materials such as used tires or is produced through low-energy, environmentally friendly processes. Therefore, it has the advantage of having lower production costs compared to conventional carbon black.
2. Raw Materials
-Conventional carbon black primarily uses petroleum-based raw materials (such as acetylene, naphtha, tar, etc.), while recycled carbon black uses renewable resources or waste materials such as biomass (e.g., vegetable oils, waste wood) or waste (e.g., waste plastics, waste tires) as raw materials.
-Using materials like vegetable oils and waste wood as raw materials can contribute to promoting carbon cycling and achieving carbon neutrality, as these materials absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while growing.
3. Production Process
-Recycled carbon black is produced through low-energy consumption and environmentally friendly processes to reduce carbon emissions. Unlike conventional high-temperature combustion or pyrolysis processes, recycled carbon black manufacturing uses methods that reduce carbon emissions by utilizing bio-based pyrolysis, electrolysis, or other energy sources (renewable energy).
-Another method involves producing recycled carbon black by pyrolyzing tires and plastic waste, while optimizing the process in an environmentally friendly way to create recycled carbon black.
4. Environmental Benefits
-Low carbon emissions: Recycled carbon black focuses on reducing carbon emissions during production by using biomass or waste instead of petroleum-based resources.
-Sustainability: Using raw materials obtained from renewable resources can address resource depletion issues. It also promotes recycling and circular economy principles, contributing to sustainable development.
-Waste recycling: Using waste materials such as used tires and plastics as raw materials helps activate recycling and address waste problems.
5. Quality
-Recycled carbon black can offer similar quality to conventional carbon black, or even improved performance in certain applications. However, its performance may vary depending on the source of materials and production process, and additional processing may be required to meet specific industry standards.
Applications of Recycled Carbon Black
-Tire Industry: It can be reused in tire production, simultaneously pursuing cost reduction and environmental protection.
-Plastic and Rubber Products: It is utilized as a filler or additive to create sustainable products, and is also used in plastic composites, rubber components, inks, and coatings.
-Pigments and Fillers: As a pigment or filler, it is mixed with other materials to enhance color and mechanical properties, with demand particularly in markets requiring environmentally friendly products. (Such as environmental regulation issues in the European market.)
Advantages of Recycled Carbon Black in regions with environmental regulations like Europe (developed countries)
-As mentioned earlier, the most important advantage is cost-effectiveness.
The European Union (EU) prioritizes environmental protection and sustainability, implementing strong environmental regulations. Particularly, European carbon emission regulations and policies like the EU Green Deal are increasing demand for sustainable materials and production methods.
*Recycled carbon black is likely to comply with these regulations and policies, receiving positive evaluations in terms of carbon emission reduction and waste management. As EU companies strongly prefer eco-friendly products to meet ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) criteria, recycled carbon black may be favorably positioned in the European market.
**In Europe, demand for environmentally friendly products is rapidly increasing, and more large companies are requiring sustainable supply chains. Especially, tire manufacturers, rubber and plastic product companies, and the chemical industry tend to prefer eco-friendly materials that can reduce carbon emissions.
***Generally, as it is produced from cheaper raw materials, it can be cost-competitive. Additionally, there's a possibility of tax benefits for eco-friendly products within Europe.
****In cases of significant environmental regulations and cost pressures, it can be a suitable alternative.
As Korea is increasingly paying attention to environmental issues, including the implementation of laws such as the Chemical Substances Control Act (K-REACH), it is expected that the utilization of Recycled Carbon Black will continue to grow in the future.
