What is Carbon Black?

Hello!

In this post, I will explain about the new material Carbon Black.

I have also posted articles explaining various topics such as Masterbatch and TiO2, so please refer to the link below.

Carbon Black is a fine particle made of carbon, used as a reinforcing agent in tires and rubber products, and as a black pigment in plastics and inks. It is also used in various fields such as electronics and batteries to improve conductivity and durability.
Carbon Black

Carbon Black is made up of very fine particles and generally appears as a fine black powder. The particles themselves are on the nanometer scale, and individual particles are not easily visible to the naked eye. However, when many particles are gathered together, they appear as solid masses or powders, as shown in the picture above. This powder is a very dark black color, with a matte and non-glossy texture.

How Carbon Black is Made

1. Furnace Black: The most common type of Carbon Black, made by decomposing hydrocarbons at high temperatures using gas as a fuel. It has low production costs and can produce large quantities of products with various properties, making it widely used in tires and rubber products.

*Process: Combustion / Pyrolysis / Cooling and Collection.

2. Channel Black: Made by incomplete combustion of natural gas in a narrow channel. It has small particle size and a large surface area, making it excellent as a pigment. However, its production efficiency is low, and it is now almost not produced due to environmental reasons.

*Process: Incomplete combustion / Collection.

3. Acetylene Black: Produced by decomposing acetylene gas at high temperatures. It is used in electrical conductive materials, batteries, and conductive rubber due to its high conductivity and low impurity content.

4. Thermal Black: Manufactured by pyrolyzing natural gas at high temperatures. It has large particles and a low structure, making it primarily used as a filler rather than a reinforcing agent in rubber products.

5. Lamp Black: Made by incomplete combustion of vegetable oils or tar. This old manufacturing method is now only used for special purposes, such as art pigments.

Uses of Carbon Black

1. Reinforcing Grades: Primarily used in tires and rubber products, it enhances the strength and wear resistance of rubber. Grades include N220, N330, N660, among others.

2. Pigment Grades: Used as a pigment in paints, plastics, inks, etc., it increases coloring power and provides stable colors. It is used in applications where color uniformity and durability are important. Grades include N220, N550, N660, among others.

3. Conductive Grades: Used in conductive plastics or rubbers to provide electrical conductivity. It is applied in electronic devices, anti-static coatings, etc.

*In addition, Carbon Black is used in materials that may come into contact with food, such as pharmaceutical capsules or food packaging, and in printer toners and inks for high-resolution printing.

What is MasterBatch?

Hello! I`m greeting you for the first time through a blog. Today, let me briefly introduce what MasterBatch is.    (Masterbatch) The dictionary definition of MasterBatch is a process in which additives are mixed in higher concentrations than the final formulation. This mixture is then incorporated into rubber or plastic raw materials, ensuring accurate additive measurement, better dispersion, and preventing scattering during processing. It is commonly used in plastic molding to improve the dispersion of pigments. However, if I explain it this way, it may be difficult to understand the exact meaning, so let me provide a simpler explanation! Masterbatch is used in various industries, especially in the plastic industry. In order to make a plastic product, it consists of extrusion using plastic resin (PE, PP, PET, PVC), which is a pressure stamping method, and injection method by injecting liquid plastic material into a pre-processed frame to complete the unique color (colorless...
